Description

To show people the United States Postal Service was a modern day delivery service, we needed to create a piece of new technology that still fit the tone of their all-American, wholesome brand. So we combined a classic holiday decoration-- the ornament-- with first-of-its-kind tracking technology to create The Most Wonderful Ornament: an ornament that tracks your package, every step of the way, even the moment it’s opened. When the ornament turns blue, it means your package is on its way, when it turns red, it means your package has been delivered, and when the ornament turns green, it means your package is being opened, that very moment.

Execution

The ornament was designed to make people’s experience as easy and elegant as possible. Using wireless technology, the ornament and the box it came in were synched. All users had to do was pack the box, ship it, then watch as the ornament tracked their package, right from the branches of their Christmas tree.

The design of the ornament was inspired by your classic Christmas ornament--both the shape and the colors we used. We wanted to apply a premium, contemporary look to a traditional holiday staple.

To do this we used a white soft touch coated material for the top portion of the bulb and two red anodized aluminum rings to separate the white material from the clear material on the bottom half of the ornament. Additionally, a system of simple icons was created to communicate when the package was shipped, delivered and then opened.

Using simple iconography and materials, we were able to create a modern version of the classic Christmas ornament, while keeping the user experience incredibly easy.
