Background
TECHO is a movement of Changemakers: individuals and institutions joining forces and taking action to restore hope for millions of families living in extreme poverty. Transforming communities by building homes, creating proper infrastructure and improving the lives of thousands of families in the slums of Latin America and the Caribbean, so they can regain control over their lives and jumpstart their dreams.
In Argentina, 1 in 10 people live in informal settlements. 72% of them have no formal conection to electricity, 98% have no sewers and 95% have no running water.
The objective of the action was to make visible the serious problem of those who can’t access decent housing, gain the media attention and generate conversation to get interviews with the presidential candidates and include this issue on their agenda of priorities.
Idea
To make visible the urgent situation of the slum inhabitants, we decided to contrast one of their precarious home constructions with the most emblematic house in Argentina. We built a replica of a slum house, painted it pink, and placed it across the street, mirroring the Casa Rosada (Pink House) – the house of Argentina´s Head of State.
Strategy
Techo is an NGO made up mostly of volunteers. It doesn’t have a budget for Advertising since everything it produces is thanks to donations from private companies and individuals.
We wondered how we could go about getting noticed with a $ 0 investment.
We knew that we had to bother, do something that speaks directly to those responsible for the sad reality that millions of Argentines live: their leaders.
We decided that the day in which the Casa Rosada began to define its future was the day we had to hit. The whole country was looking there and there was where we had to do something.
Execution
To make visible the urgent situation of the slum inhabitants, we decided to contrast one of their precarious home constructions with the most emblematic house in Argentina. We built a replica of a slum house, painted it pink, and placed it across the street, mirroring the Casa Rosada (Pink House)– the house of Argentina´s Head of State.
The structure was made in the garages of TECHO and it was some volunteers who put it in its place.
We did different activities at the place (IG Live, interviews, etc) with people from the slums and TECHO representatives.
