Description

Our film begins under the eerie veil of darkness.

From a driver’s perspective, the distinctive action of a BMW’s headlights pierces the darkness to illuminate the beginning of our journey along England’s highways and bye-ways to the home of England rugby, Twickenham.

As day breaks and England’s landscape becomes visible, it’s clear that rugby is in the air. A silhouetted player takes a drop kick, an England shirt flutters in the wind on a clothesline, red and white bunting adorns a pub. All the while, the anthem of English Rugby, ‘Swing Low, Sweet Chariot’ echoes across the land, building from a hypnotic chant to a visceral roar as we reach our destination, Twickenham.

A series of titles deliver our message:

SOME ROADS AREN’T MEANT TO BE TRAVELLED ALONE.

BMW, PROUD SUPPORTERS OF ENGLAND RUGBY, GRASSROOTS TO ELITE.

THE ROAD TO TWICKENHAM.

Execution

Our ambition was to create a film that captured the soul of English rugby.

With this in mind, we recorded an 80,000 strong Twickenham crowd in full cry singing “Swing Low, Sweet Chariot”, as England took on their old foes Australia during a recent international.

Interwoven with this raw and moving anthem, we added a tapestry of sounds that told the story of the fans’ journey across the nation as the day of conflict dawned. Slightly distorted as if from a half-remembered dream, the evocative sounds and the passionate singing of the crowd build to a stirring crescendo as the impressive stadium looms before us.

The use of ‘Swing Low, Sweet Chariot’, gives the film extra poignancy, not only because it is the anthem of English Rugby, but because it’s originally a freedom song about deliverance to the Promised Land. The intent is to show that BMW will remain shoulder to shoulder with the team and nation, as they strive to lift the sport’s greatest trophy in front of a home crowd in Twickenham.
