Background
Due to the war in Ukraine, our country's low economic growth, and the world markets, South Africa has seen a rising cost of poultry, a rising cost that like all costs ends up, unfortunately, being passed on to the consumer.
And you only need to go as far as our social media comments to see that our consumers are not happy. Especially when something is affecting their wallets, and their hunger.
While we couldn’t, unfortunately, stop price increases, because that’s bad business, we could communicate that we also have offers that aren’t so heavy on the wallet, but perfect for the hunger.
During March 2023, a month when inflation across the board was a national topic, we decided to promote our EasyBucks meals that only costs R30 (1,63 American dollars). To remind our consumers that while times are tough, you can always feed your soul, at Chicken Licken.
Execution
We find ourselves watching an overloaded vehicle as it chugs down a dusty road on its way through the middle of nowhere. Inside we find two men and a bear. A bear that is holding a Popcorn Chicken Shaker from Chicken Licken, for only 30 bucks. It's unbelievable. 30 bucks!? For a popcorn chicken shaker? And sauce?
We watch as the two men, basically oblivious to the fact that somehow, and obviously for some time, there has been a bear in the car, discuss the unbelievable price of only 30 bucks. Even when the car backfires and pops into the air, they resume their conversation. A Popcorn Chicken Shaker from Chicken Licken for 30 bucks. 30 bucks? 30 bucks!
Outcome
Chicken Licken has over 250 stores nationwide. For maximum reach in a third-world country, we chose to flight our film on TV, across all channels, including, DSTV (26 Channels), e-TV, SABC 1, SABC 2, and SABC 3. With a reach of 35 000 000.
