Background

Misperceptions, preconceived notions, and stigma related to schizophrenia are everywhere, both in society and even within the schizophrenia community. Identifying new ways to reach key segments of the community to counteract these perceptions was sorely needed to address unmet needs in the marketplace. Grounded in research showing that patients want audio-based solutions to focus their mind and drown out possible symptoms such as auditory hallucinations, the award-winning Unseen & Unheard podcast was born. This impactful and authentic podcast was designed to educate and raise awareness among the schizophrenia community about key topics important to them, infuse messages of hope that living a full life with schizophrenia is possible, and to help fuel a greater understanding of schizophrenia among patients, loved ones, and the public.

Execution

Season two highlights stories of people not just living but thriving with schizophrenia. Episodes feature conversations with authors, advocates, musicians, and healthcare professionals having open dialogue about getting their lives back on track after navigating a diagnosis, overcoming stigma, and educating themselves about treatment options. Stories featured include:

- Kristen, the daughter of a mother with mental illness who was then diagnosed with schizophrenia and was inspired to write a book about her experience.

- Carlos, a Psychiatric Nurse Practitioner who also lives with schizophrenia.

- Nathan, an avid reader living with schizophrenia.

- Richard, a musician living with schizophrenia.

- Bethany, an accomplished violinist with dreams of being an actor, whose plans veered off course when she began experiencing symptoms.

- Tara, a single mom and host Kody Green’s mother who was relieved when she was finally diagnosed with schizoaffective disorder after decades of misdiagnoses.
