OVERVIEW

Description

Create a cost-effective solar-powered lamp as a safe, reliable alternative to kerosene lamps, and as a solution to those living without any light at all.

Execution

Not only does the solar-powered lamp provide 4 levels of brightness, but includes an SD card reader, USB ports, an FM radio, can play MP3s, and has even created micro-economies through its phone- and device-charging capabilities. The solar panel fits in a custom backpack for charging on the go, giving people a level of independence that other solar lamps can’t.

Outcome

In 2015, 3,833 lamps were donated to 12 countries: Haiti, Iraq, Liberia, Madagascar, Malawi, Mozambique, Kenya, Nepal, Pakistan, the Philippines, Uganda and Ghana, impacting over 27,000 people. $909,379.25 in total savings for recipients combined.
