Description
We came across the horrific statistic that 41 percent of trans youth members attempt suicide. Around the same time, we unearthed a beautiful voiceover from 1960s philosopher Alan Watts. In Watt's speech, he asks the question “Did you ever seen a cloud that was misshapen? Did you ever seen a badly-designed wave” He answers for the audience: “No, they always do the right thing.” He goes on to compare humans to clouds and waves and assures us that we are just as free to be who we are. We thought Watts' sentiments might speak to the millions of people, people like six-year-old Vivienne a.k.a.Snapper featured in this film, who struggle to be themselves in a world that tells them they should be ashamed of who they are. So we wove in real trans youth stories with dreamlike visions of 2015 trans icon Caitlyn Jenner, and sent our love out.
Execution
We held two shoots: one with Caitlyn and one with the kids. To photograph Caitlyn, we went to her Malibu home. We shot with director Matt Fife. Our creative director styled her in a blush dress and flowing hair. She showed us her closet where she kept all her Bruce clothes. With the kids, we headed to Portland, Oregon for the gorgeous autumn naturescapes. We worked with director Stuart Getty and production company In The Flicker to bring the stories of these kids to life, a worked to navigate these delicate issues with honesty and grace.
Outcome
The film debuted at TEDxPortland on April 9th to a sold-out crowd. It won against dozens of film submissions to be the opening piece for the weekend's WonderLust event. #WeAreClouds trended on social media and TEDx attendees flooded social media with photos of themselves posing with fluffy cloud props in the event photo booth (please search #WeAreClouds on Instagram to see the social buzz the film stirred up).
Perhaps most impressively, following the film’s debut at TEDx, a Kentucky elementary school teacher approached our agency and asked if they could show #WeAreClouds to their classroom. That is the reason that we made this film and we are so happy that people across the country are learning that they are perfect exactly as they are, especially in more conservative areas where kids might not hear those messages as often.
