OVERVIEW

Background

To draw attention to the predicament of the world’s many imprisoned journalists, Swedish magazine store partnered with national newspaper Expressen – turning the entire newspaper into an ad for press freedom.

Pressbyran (The Press Agency) is Sweden's biggest store for magazines and newspapers, and a supporter of press freedom since 1907.

On World Press Freedom Day, May 3rd 2018, Pressbyran collaborated with one of Sweden’s biggest newspapers, Expressen, to bring attention to the world’s imprisoned journalists.

The front page was replaced by empty white space, headlined ”What the world can’t read.” Articles were also left empty, bylined with the names and portraits of journalists imprisoned around the world – letting their silence speak, and showing the loss their absence means for all of us and democracy around the world.

The campaign reached over 3 million people – 30% of Sweden’s population.
