OVERVIEW

Background

Founded in 2013, Modibodi was one of the pioneers of reusable period underwear globally, and our continual focus on innovation has kept us at the forefront of the category.

With one sanitary pad taking an estimated 500 - 800 years to break down, sustainability has always been at the forefront of our business. That’s why we wanted to go further than any brand had before, and create a product that completely biodegraded back into nature.

Underwear as we know it is not biodegradable. Elastane (a non-biodegradable, lightweight synthetic material renowned for its resistance to deterioration) is the key element that makes them comfortable and stretchy. So naturally, we dove deep into researching different fabrics that could break down these barriers, and create a product that was truly biodegradable.

Idea

Introducing The world’s first Biodegradable Period Briefs. A pair of period underwear that will never end up in landfill.

This innovative pair of underwear was developed over two years and tested at the Royal Melbourne Institute of Technology(RMIT). It’s made using a combination of natural and synthetic textiles-Merino wool, bamboo and Tencel. Up to 97% of the briefs will break down into nontoxic substances at the end of their usable life and most of the underwear material will decompose within six months when buried in active soil.

Our Biodegradable Period Briefs are not a fast fashion garment. They have been tested for 100 cold washes to maintain their quality over 8 years of periods.

But by using out-of-the-box thinking and turning to science every step of the way, we’ve created a pair of period underwear which is as good to the planet, as it is on the hips.

Strategy

The development of Biodegradable Period Briefs is crucial to help counter the effects of climate change. For our launch campaign we opted away from the typical glossy photos of our product, as we knew this wouldn’t have cut through. Instead, we featured an image of our briefs after biodegrading for three months. It worked.

Through media and PR alone, we reached 62.5m people during launch. We made headlines in Australia, the UK, the US and Europe. Refinery29 said ‘These period pants are so good I’m never going back to pads and tampons’. We also converted people who have never tried period underwear before, 45% of purchases were from new customers.

In July 2022, we’ll release another colour of our Biodegradable Period Briefs. We’ll also be looking at how we can incorporate our patented technology into more products, with the hopes that one day, all period underwear will be biodegradable.

Execution

Through ground-breaking science and rigorous testing, Modibodi dug deep to create a product that was as biodegradable as it was reliable.

First, the biodegradability. This came down to the unique blend of fabrics - TENCEL and Merino wool. The Merino wools' natural crimp allows the briefs to retain their shape, with TENCEL providing a finer, soft hand-feel

The second - and more crucial - part of the innovation is the reliability in the absorbent gusset. Considering our products exist for people experiencing their period, it was important that the biodegradability didn’t affect the efficacy of our end product.

Our Biodegradable Period Briefs boast an absorbent gusset made from three layers that tackle absorbency. The top layer is made from Merino wool, well-known it's ability to combat moisture and excess liquid, the middle layer is made from 100% bamboo terry fabric absorbent material, consisting of thousands of tiny loops that stretch and work hard to soak up liquids. Finally, the bottom layer is made of a specially-created thermoplastic polymer that works to buffer leaks of any shape and size.

Only 3 percent of our Biodegradable Period Briefs are not biodegradable– the waist and leg elastic, which breaks down within five years.
