This graphic is called “look”, a design décor the four NTT companies developed specifically for Tokyo 2020.

Four companies from NTT group, Japan’s largest telecommunication business, are a Gold Partner (the highest-ranked domestic sponsorship program) of Tokyo 2020 Olympics & Paralympics and have supported the past three Olympics & Paralympics held in Japan through various communication services.

NTT group plans to feature the look in various media provided by NTT to differentiate itself from other sponsors, promote its group presence and brand image domestically and internationally, and boost excitement towards the games through the design’s close affinity with the event.

A promotion movie featuring Souun Takeda, as he paints the letters for the look, has been published online and receiving reactions from across Internet and SNS.

Tell the jury about the typography.

The Chinese characters and pictograms placed across the look are the works of Souun Takeda, Japan’s prominent calligrapher, depicting the one and only world view. The bold arrangement of keywords like “hope”, “light”, and “5G” represents NTT’s innovativeness, while the use of traditional tools like “calligraphy” and “Chinese characters” promotes Japanese culture. The blend of tradition and innovation becomes the impression of the brand for those who look at the graphic.

Pictograms symbolizing various Olympics & Paralympics events and the use of Olympic colors demonstrate the design’s affinity with the event and instill positive feelings, such as expectation, excitement, and fun.
