BriefExplanation

Clowns features a troupe of comic characters taking to their collapsing cars and causing havoc on the roads with their antics. A range of Audi models calmly save the day with their hi-tech safety capabilities. Eventually, the new Audi A8 parks up, showcasing its park assist feature, between two circus jalopies, before the tagline ‘Audi Technology. Clown Proof’.

Solution

The brief was to create an ad to showcase Audi’s driver-assist technology using clowns to highlight the sometimes foolish drivers on the road - a brilliantly cynical idea for what could be a boring brief - but the director crafted ways to showcase the technology naturally without making it feel like it was shoehorned in. In terms of creative direction, the director started their treatment with the words, “imagine if Michael Mann and Buster Keaton had a love child and you’d be getting close to the way I’d like to tell this story.” Really this was the basis for their creative choices; from cinematography to locations, and casting to comedic timing.
