Background:
Diablo is one of the most successful franchises in video game history. And after 10 years without any new title, Blizzard is about to release the next one: Diablo Immortal, the first of the series for mobile. Our challenge was to make an infernal launch, considering the objective of taking millions of Diablo fans and gamers to the underworld.
Tell the jury about the art direction.
We crafted 666 unique posters, each one with a different pentagram that could turn into portals to hell. It took time, and guts, to create a number of posters we've never seen on Earth before.
It's an evil, but also interactive, art direction: we built from scratch an A.I. capable of reading the universal symbol of the devil.
With any of our 666 posters and its pentagrams, consumers could experience a summoning using their own smartphones. It was the first time in human history that people could summon the darkness using a poster. Or 666.
Is there any cultural context that would help the jury understand how this work was perceived by people in the country where it ran?
In order to release a game that is set in hell, we dared to hack the universal symbol of darkness: the pentagram.
And such an evil game shouldn't be downloaded from the cloud, it should be summoned straight from hell.
