Situated in Disney’s Tomorrowland, a futuristic-themed area within the park, Pepsi showcased its own interpretation of the future, with a 20-minute, multi-sensory experience that challenged the way we see life, our own creation and the very foundation of existence.
This ride begins at the birth of the cosmos, spans through the present Age of Innovation, and into the future where light, energy and human enlightenment become one. Peel back the many layers that comprise our planet and you will find its pulse.
Execution
A 20-minute sensory experience about where we come from and where we may be going. The experience helps us recognize that no matter our diversity, we are united by our fundamental and elemental origins.
By subverting from the Pepsi logo, these deconstructed elements become a visual thread that takes viewers on a fantastic journey - an abstract voyage that every viewer is left to interpret in their own way as it resonates within their own unique experiences and understanding.
Diversity and the colors of culture become the canvas upon which the theme is showcased. The beauty of day and mystery of night are equally represented as we travel around the globe through 2-D and 3-D animation, which allows us to see various aspects of human movement and activity and representative streams of winding color.
Outcome
Since its opening in June, Shanghai Disney Resort has received close to 10 million visitors, helping to grow Disney's international unit and make it the biggest success story of 2016 for the company. As the exclusive beverage partner to Shanghai Disney, PepsiCo is leveraging the partnership as a testbed to fuel innovation, introduce new products, packaging and technology.
PepsiCo continues to expand its portfolio in China, further reducing its environmental footprint and investing in people and the local communities where the company operates.
Relevancy
PepsiCo has returned to Disney for the first time in nearly three decades, this time working with Shanghai Disney to provide resort goers with an extraordinary, never-before seen entertainment experience created to evoke a futuristic feel through a combination of graphic visual experiences that incorporates music and roving entertainment, stage dance performances, fashion and pop culture elements for guests' viewing pleasure.
Strategy
Looking to expand its portfolio in China, Pepsi created a partnership with the Shanghai Disney Resort to speak directly to the Chinese consumer market in relevant and future-facing ways that integrated well within the park’s themes and programming.
In Chinese culture, a corporation with a long history represents stability and strength. The Pepsi logo is a manifestation of over 100 years of growth and prosperity. Therefore, at the center of this graphic experience lies the Pepsi logo – a symbol of duality, co-existence and a codifying theme.
Synopsis
In anticipation of the opening of the Shanghai Disney Resort, PepsiCo signed a multi-year strategic alliance making it the primary beverage supplier to the Resort.
This strategic alliance marks the first time in nearly 30 years that PepsiCo beverages has been served on a Disney property. PepsiCo leveraged this opportunity to connect directly with consumers in provocative ways and provide a thoughtful point-of-view that was well integrated within the Disney park experience.
