Why is this work relevant for Film Craft?

We approached a director in the community to help us tell a non-linear story of a 2SLGBTQI person’s life throughout different periods in time. To be faithful to the time periods represented on screen we used wardrobing, set dressing and vintage camera lenses, as well as a 4:3 aspect ratio and film out to bring us into the 1950s–70s. The timbre and emotion in the VO was the final piece to bring gravity to the spot.

Please provide any cultural context that would help the Jury understand any cultural, national or regional nuances applicable to this work.

Canada’s queer community is strong, proud, and protected, but it’s also aging. We’re seeing our first queer elders entering long term care homes and navigating a rigid healthcare system designed without them in mind, to the fault of our own outdated teaching practices. What’s worse, we’re leaving them to advocate for themselves, which can feel impossible in the early stages of dementia.

Write a short summary of what happens in the film.

An elderly trans woman experiencing dementia recounts her long life—the ups, the downs, and the challenges she has faced and overcome in her nearly 75 years. The latest being her confinement to a care home and her subpar treatment by the medical staff, unaware of how to treat someone in her unique situation.

Background:

The aging 2SLGBTQIA community is at risk of developing dementia and entering long term care homes ill equipped to care for their unique needs.

We had to get the wider (35-65) 2SLGBTQIA community empathetically aware of and indignantly talking about the plight of 2SLGBTQIA people living with dementia.

We had to bring awareness to this issue among younger members of the community to help advocate for their elders, and call for a revamped healthcare system designed with all of Canada’s elders in mind.

Tell the jury about the casting process.

Members of the 2SLGBTQI community with dementia face a unique challenge when dealing with the disease. Being queer within the cis-hetero healthcare system can be difficult, but in the case of dementia and its effect on identity, it can mean a tragic loss of self. This is the sentiment that became the heart of our film.

Egale Canada wanted to raise awareness of this growing problem and focus on the compassionate and representative care required to navigate change. We needed to show just how much more there is to lose than memories.

We had an ambitious story to tell—a journey of one person’s transition throughout 70 years of life. To authentically tell this story we ensured each trans or queer character was accurately and comfortably portrayed by a trans or queer individual.Almost all of our principal talent were first-time actors who felt passionate about the project, and their real life
