Cultural / Context information for the jury

According to the NGO Front Line Defenders, Colombia is the most dangerous country in the world for those that seek to protect human and environmental rights. In 2020 alone more than 166 activists were assassinated, and between 2016 and 2020 more than 971 have been assassinated. Amnesty International is known to work for human rights globally in 160 countries, yet despite this, the Colombian government has refused to meet and engage in dialogue with the organization about the crisis. For this reason, a powerful, creative campaign was necessary to generate social pressure through the population as well as the members of Congress themselves to achieve and guarantee the protection of human and environmental rights activists in Colombia

In Colombia, as in much of the world, politicians are known to fall asleep during the plenary sessions of congress or parliament. It is a serious issue worldwide, but more so when during these plenary sessions of the peace accords, Colombian politicians sleep peacefully while many of the real victims will never wake up again.

That is why we turned Twitter into an alarm that would not stop ringing until @rovillalba, @joseobdulio and hundreds of other politicians understand that while they are sleeping, our activists will be assassinated.

The campaign generated more than 33,000 signatures (Canada 3,600, Belgium 7,560, Colombia 5,353, Norway 16,933) requesting the protection of Jani Silva, not only an important environmental and human rights activist but also a symbol of the activists’ struggle in Colombia. If we were to win this victory, it would not only be a symbolic victory, but also a roadmap for the future safeguarding and well-being of the thousands of social and environmental activists that Colombia has.

Through this campaign we achieved a change in the government's behavior, going from not even having a meeting with Amnesty International, to issuing resolution number 00001303/2021 in favor of Jani Silva to guarantee her protection.
