Why is this work relevant for Film Craft?

Oliveira dos Cen Anos went from being a simple video clip to a major cinematographic super production. What began as a “Centenary anthem” project, hastily turned into a demanding and ambitious challenge with an emotional commitment to Galicia and its culture in order to be remembered throughout history.

The filming process took place in several locations, with a high level of technical complexity at the level of mainstream film media, and with the collaboration of the most talented local musicians. Furthermore, thousands of fans came together to take part in the recording in order to be a part of the

Please provide any cultural context that would help the Jury understand any cultural, national or regional nuances applicable to this work.

The whole song is an ode to Galician culture, focusing on what best represents Celta: the identity, landscapes, the Celta fans of today and those from the past. On the one hand, the composition of the anthem is in Galician. The artists who interpret the song are legendary groups from the Galician music scene, such as Coral Casablanca or Lagharteiras. Finally, the rhythm and lyrics represent Galician traditional folk music.

The entire video clip is filmed in some of Galicia’s most emblematic landscapes, highlighting the Vigo Bay area’s imagery, the likes of Rande bridge, the island of San Simon and the Bay’s famous ‘bateas’ which harvest mussels, one of the most renowned local delicacies.

In addition, in order to represent Galician roots and matriarchy, women take on a special role in the song and throughout the video. The piece highlights the importance of women amongst Galician society with the dominance of Lagharteiras and their powerful voices.

Write a short summary of what happens in the film.

The video’s main characters are the landscapes which surround Vigo’s Bay and its most emblematic elements, the likes of San Simon, the ‘bateas’ used to harvest mussels and Rande bridge. This goes to show how the club tried to address deeper issues than football: a sense of belonging to a community, a club’s crest and colours linked to a city and its people, their land, their language and the landscapes that surround them.

The imagery of fans cheering tirelessly, the Celta fans of the past, looking proudly at the legacy that they leave behind. The prominence of women in the video is also clear, expressing their importance as the driving force of Galician society.

Musically, the piece begins with a romantic atmosphere, starting off with the voices of Coral Casablanca, which are broken by the screeches of the Lagharteiras and finally by the roar of Celta’s energetic fans.

Background:

The moment that internationally renowned artist, C. Tangana, showed interest in taking on the challenge of composing Real Club Celta’s anthem for its centenary, the club knew that it could not pass up on the golden opportunity that had presented itself.

In 2023, the club’s 100th year anniversary came amongst complicated circumstances. In the final match of the 22/23 season, an agonizing save from an almost certain relegation was achieved after an unexpected victory from the sky-blues who beat league champion, FC Barcelona. After another poor end to the season, disappointment reigns amongst the fans, who have no hope in getting any better in the centenary year of their beloved club.

The club has roughly 13,000 season-ticket holders, showing a clear divide between the club and its fans by hitting a historic low. What can the club do to reconcile with its fanbase as it enters its second century?

Tell the jury anything relevant about the cinematography.

The filming was an ambitious, once-in-a-lifetime, project. The complexity of the locations selected, such as the ‘bateas’, the mountains surrounding Vigo and its Bay, the collaboration with top-shelf artists gave way to a hectic filming process. Furthermore, having successfully summoned thousands of fans for a nocturnal recording session on the night before Real Club Celta beat FC Barcelona at home on the 6th of June 2023 made it that bit more satisfying.
