Write a short summary of what happens in the film.
The film features a song as a call for people who suffer from suicidal thoughts. In it, a silent choir is formed by 32 people who represent the daily victims of suicide in Brazil. The film begins with the characters walking on an abandoned trail, symbolizing the loneliness that the victims feel. The song begins with a “humming” of the characters in agony who carry the symbol of a hand printed on their mouths as a way of representing the prison of silence. With gestures and expressions that show a visible restlessness we see his distress in trying to express the suffering.
As the music evolves, we see the choir gradually freeing themselves from their despair, they rub their hands over their faces, erasing the ink stain and letting out their voices. The choir gains strength, the music grows and the characters finally break free from the silence.
Tell the jury about the music / sound design
Talking about suicide can prevent tragedy. That was the starting point of Voices From Silence. Music represents 3 stages of the search for freedom from suffering. First, we hear a long stretch in which the members of the choir “whisper” a muffled scream, as if they are trapped and lonely in their own storm. We hear stamping on the floor, as if someone wants to stop, at the same time that it sounds like violence to those who hear. Carlinhos Brown speaks a few words that express the feeling of a victim. In the second moment, the song gains melody and Brown's words are sung, but we still hear uncomfortable and aggressive sounds in contrast to the singer's solidarity. One by one, the choir members start to sing, we hear relieved breaths, showing that sharing the pain can be the best way.
