Description

The London 2012 Olympics presented the BBC with a unique opportunity – the chance to present the biggest sporting event on earth to the host-nation audience.

We delivered the Olympics on all four screens (web, mobile, tablet and connected television) with a single vision: Never miss a moment

Our mobile website enabled users with a mobile phone with a web browser to keep up to date with the latest Olympic action.

The mobile site had 7.4 million unique UK users during the Games, 281 million pageviews and 3.2 million requests for live and on demand video.

We built two views - one for touchscreen smartphones and one for feature phones.

The key features of the mobile site were:

*Every minute of every session of every sport streamed live - up to 24 live video streams a day plus highlights clips on 3G and wifi using adaptive bitrate (Android and iOS only in the UK)

*Top stories of the day

* A daily overview of the top things to watch and follow each day

* Daily live text commentaries of breaking news from BBC journalists at the key Olympic events

* Two network channels of live video coverage broadcasting up to 16 hours a day

* Detailed schedule and results service (provided by Delta Tre)

* Medals table (linking to individual country pages)

* A dynamically generated page for every Olympic discipline (36 in total) featuring guides, video and latest news

* A dynamically generated page for every competing country (200+) with key facts, latest news, medals and videos

* A dynamically generated page for every competing Olympic athlete (11,000+) with key facts, social media links latest news, medals and videos

We also built a responsive portal page which brought together coverage of the sporting and cultural events taking place as part of the London 2012 Olympics at m.bbc.co.uk/2012

The mobile site was widely used by athletes, media and staff to the Olympic venues to follow the Games action. We also received positive reaction to the usability of the mobile site with screenreaders.

The BBC’s Olympic services on mobile also leave an important legacy for the mobile video industry:

50%+ of people watched at least one event on smartphone or tablet.

84% of people have increased their mobile video use since the Games.
