In the film a young man from an Indian village is seen beating the thali (the steel plate) atop his terrace. Traditionally this is done to announce the arrival of a baby boy. Happy villagers gather, women sings songs for the baby boy, sweets are distributed and village elders arrive to bless the baby. And that’s when the father comes with the shocker – he in fact has just become the proud father of a baby girl. Stunned beyond belief, womenfolk go back and music stops. Its sacrilege. Then… the unthinkable happens. Moved by the wails of this new born, the village elders end up congratulating the father. Merriment starts all over again – this time the song the women folk sing is for the birth of the girl child – a first in the history of that village. The film is based on true events.
