Description
Cadillac ATS vs. The World Is set in four countries around the world, and four of the world’s most challenging roads to demonstrate the agile, smart, quick dynamics of the Cadillac ATS.
Execution
This was not your typical commercial production but certainly one that goes down as the most rewarding. We were slated to travel 2 crews: one for TVC and one for Doc. This included traveling 20 crew members and 3 camera packages all across the world. This was not an easy task. Every country has a different set of strict rules and regulations, and getting gear in and out under a time crunch is a job in-of-itself. In addition, we had to coordinate hospitality in all the different cities for an entire extensive production crew, agency members, and client. And, possibly the most important challenge: the cars. How do you shoot in 4 countries with all the proper documentation and yet have the featured cars show up on time? We made it possible through long work hours, and a devoted crew to make it happen.
The journey began in Chile, Punta Arenas. This location has the strongest wind speeds we had ever experienced. To give you an idea, the trees would bend over in 90 degree angles. It was a challenge to shoot the vehicles that carried gear and yet not damage anything in the process. And, keeping the car clean and presentable was also a task, after-all, we are featuring a Cadillac ATS and appearance is important.
In Morocco. our car showed up damaged, but all can be fixed. At this location, we were on the switchbacks where you find the most amazing roads in the world. In this location, we had to be wary of getting our cameras damaged in the sand storm, and inevitably, we had a few damaged cameras as a result. Because of regulations, we could not ship back to the US the damaged cameras, so we carried with us the damaged cameras, in addition to coordinating camera rentals in each specific new country we traveled to next.
Monaco. The challenge here was that we were only allowed 3 turns to have the car drive the course. Three opportunities to get the perfect shot.
China has the most strict rules of all the locations. While anxiously awaiting whether or not the government would release our cars being held, we had some extra time to brainstorm new documentary ideas and catch some great footage in the meantime. We made our way to Zengzhou, which is where we shot the caves.
On a final note, everyone on the crew felt an immense rewarding feeling for being part of such a large production, and having created, what in their opinion, is the most beautiful footage they have been an integral part in obtaining.
