Description

For World Press Freedom Day, we organized a virtual 24-hour protest and put Instagram íbehind barsí.

We created a social movement (CANT BAR MY VOICE) by encouraging the community to create their own Instagram-mosaic and express solidarity with imprisoned journalists worldwide.

Execution

We created a microsite that allowed users to easily upload a picture of their choice. Automatically, a nine-photo mosaic with our filter was created ñ ready to share. When users uploaded the images to Instagram, the platformís existing grid created the illusion they were behind prison bars. By pushing the hashtag #cmbv, we were able to interact with our community and share their content on our own instagram profile.

Outcome

We started with a local Austrian initiative with participation by the largest national newspapers, the biggest local bloggers and even members of parliament. Quickly the message spread all over the world ñ journalists, bloggers and media from Cambodia, Turkey, Russia, Portugal, Brazil, Tunisia, Kashmir, Macedonia, US and many more joined the initiative. We created a global community of voices around a common purpose: Press Freedom.

Thousands of people joined the movement and over one hundred million estimated impressions were created within 24 hours. However, solidarity doesnít end on one day.
