OVERVIEW

Description

Addressing the controversy over American police brutality towards the African American community, the music video portrays a one-on-one conflict between two individuals - the white cop and the black citizen. There is no neat solution at the end because there is no neat solution in the real world. Our goal was to highlight the futility of the violence, not celebrate it.

Execution

With the opportunity to create a film that meant something, there was a responsibility to do just that. We had to exploit the lyrics, aggression and emotion of the track, and make a film that would ignite a valuable and productive conversation about racially motivated violence in the US. It's provocative, so we were tasked with making something that expressed the intensity of senseless violence without eclipsing our humanity. It was important to write a story that didn’t paint a simplistic portrait of the characters of the Cop and Kid. They're not stereotypes but complex, real people so the power had to shift between them at certain points throughout the story. The film begins and it feels like they have been fighting for days. They’re exhausted, not a single punch is thrown. Their violence is communicated through clumsy, raw emotion thus highlighting the futility of violence rather than glorifying it.

Outcome

With over 1.6M views on Youtube, this was Run The Jewels’ most popular song and got coverage not only across all music media such as Rolling Stone and MTV but mainstream news outlets. The group’s profile went from underground heroes to mainstream social savants. Killer Mike, has since appeared on various news channels like CNN, MSNBC and national shows like The View and Stephen Colbert and is currently working with Bernie Sanders on his presidential campaign. Additionally, the video was shortlisted for the Grammies, and nominated for the indie-community’s Liberas.
