Background

Dark had interested viewers with its cave that’s prominent in the series, and in its intro. We didn’t want to pass on this interest. We had a mission of making fans experience Dark. Our objective was to get fans to visit Kanyon, one of the busiest shopping malls in Istanbul with high foot traffic.

Idea

Dark fans got to experience the intertwined times, locations, and popular themes of the series. Iconic elements from the series were present in the work. The installation was designed like the famous cave and was separated into 5 segments. Space included a transition room that had double screen technology. We left clues in the form of print copies of photos from the series, we replicated the car from the series. We added details like the TV, torture chair, posters and abandoned spaces from the series. Looking through the second floor of the shopping mall, the project displayed Dark’s logo.

Strategy

The focused target audience for the series was white-collar workers who keep track of trends and the entertainment industry. We knew they were the audience that would spread the news of this project the fastest. So we used a shopping mall that white-collar workers visit every day located in Levent, Istanbul that is the highrise center of the city.

Execution

The production of the installation took almost 3 weeks, we used special 3D designs. We decided on which items of the series we could include into the installation one by one. We planned everything we could bring like the posters and the car from the series. The set up was done overnight and the installation stayed there for a full week.

Outcome

With the help of our installation that we did at Kanyon, a shopping mall with daily foot traffic of 50.000 people, Dark became one of the most loved and watched series in Turkey. Over a thousand photos were shared on social media, and some fans came out of town to visit the installation. Our project was shared by popular Turkish outlets, as well as on Reddit, where the creator of Dark Baran Bo Odar saw the project and shared it on his Instagram.
