Background

The brief was to craft a pair of photoreal CGI pigeons to portray the brand's message that you no longer need a satellite dish to view DirecTV. The scripts use humour to appeal to a broad audience and the animation and craft had to bring that humour to life through engaging and memorable performances that stay in people's minds.

Execution

This project covers every aspect of visual effects possible. From highly complex CGI birds which had to be crafted from scratch, environmental assets and extensions, painstaking compositing to ensure all CGI elements were seamlessly integrated into frame as well as lots of hidden VFX on screens and backgrounds. The biggest challenges were generating over 125,000 feathers to groom the birds, adding in fine details including adding fine details such as iridescence to ensure that the birds mirrored their real life counterparts. Given that the two birds are seen interacting and each have distinct personalities, the team had to animate them individually, bringing enough character and charm whilst balancing the sense of realism to engage the audience in an authentic way.
