Background
“Let’s Call The Whole Thing Off” is an American classic. A light-hearted duet about a couple who can’t bear to be without the other, despite the differences that push them apart. Their differences are manifested in lyrically playful verses comparing different English dialects. For instance: “You like ‘potayto’ and I like ‘potahto’ // You like ‘tomayto’ and I like ‘tomahto’.
Though first performed by Fred Astaire & Ginger Rogers in 1937, the song has proven timeless. From 1957, when artists like Ella Fitzgerald and Louis Armstrong offered their take, to 2012, when it made its way to Broadway in the musical “Nice Work If You Can Get It.”
Execution
Every relationship is like a duet. Each person, draws from their own life experiences and contributes something different to the relationship’s narrative. However, every relationship has its challenges. So when we set out to tell a story about how two people can cook their way through almost any difference we knew we’d need a piece of music that highlighted relationship tension.
George & Ira Gershwins’ “Let’s Call the Whole Thing Off,” from the 1937 movie Shall We Dance, was that song. The lyrics were the perfect reflection of the differences in a relationship. But the classic Hollywood-ified connotations of the song wouldn’t work for modern tastes. So, we infused the lyrics with new meaning by varying the emotional tone each scene was delivered in. That, gave us a new take on a classic duet that related to everyone. In other words, we built this spot around this song.
