Background
The brief was to work with the incredible film shot by Sasha Rainbow and use sound design and clever music editing to create a crafted, but emotionally charged soundscape to drive the narrative and accentuate the graphic reality that the players go through on a daily basis. The biggest challenge was really doing the painful moments justice. I didn't just want the sounds to be buried in the mix and missed, I wanted them to at times take centre stage and really make the audience wince. Another challenge was achieving all of this with an extremely catchy and fun-sounding song.
Execution
We recorded hours of bespoke gory and wince-inducing foley to create a more visceral feel. Then we intertwined the sound design into the music as much as possible so that the individual elements never got in the way of each other. By Timing as many of the big hits and impacts to the tempo of the music, we found a really effective way of being able to push the sound design whilst always driving the momentum of the music. A good example of this can be heard at 45s, as the camera pans up to reveal the blood on the shorts - we start to hear a train approaching from the distance. I timed the clacks of the train wheels on the track to the tempo of the music. This really helped us push a sound effect much more prominently into the mix whilst keeping the music dominant.
