Description

In 1966, the Ford GT40 won LeMans, taking the podium with a stunning 1-2-3 finish.

Now, 50 years later, Ford are coming back to Le Mans with an all-new Ford GT, with new innovations, new rivalries and new hopes.

To raise awareness of this, we were briefed to produce a teaser film showing the technology features of the new Ford GT, for use on Ford's global website homepage.

The idea was to dramatise the new Ford GT performing in its natural habitat, the racetrack.

As a very high performance super car, the technical features are best shown at high speed. In order to create a situation to best showcase these features, a scenario of driving from 0 to 200mph and back to 0 was devised.

Execution

Without access to the new car, and without access to the place where it all happened, Le Mans; a very technical and creative challenge was set....create the whole film in CGI.

This was achieved using the CAD data that came from Ford Engineering, the raw industrial data that is used to manufacture the car. Our product data modelling artists had to painstakingly distill the CAD data to the elements that were required to be rendered.

This was then lovingly rendered and crafted by our CGI artists and animators involving several man hours of attention to detail. After researching various race circuits and using photographic reference, we then created a racetrack environment, again using only CGI, but ensuring believable photo-realism throughout.

To give the film further authenticity, we mirrored the visual effect of a hand held camera that follows the path of the car. The reflections in the car and the way the light hits the surfaces, was all manually crafted by the CGI artists and animators.

We literally turned raw industrial data into beautiful art.

Primarily for use on Ford.com website, the film is also being aired at various International Motorsport events, including this year's 24 Heures du Mans race in June 2016.

The film has increased awareness of the new Ford GT and has delivered the desired effect of haloing the Ford brand. There is now a real air of excitement and anticipation leading up to the car's appearance at LeMans.

The brief was received in October 2015, with final delivery in December 2015. The Launch teaser film was first aired in Times Square on New Years Eve 2015, and went live on Ford.com in January. This will run until June 2016.

Outcome

As this is industrial product data and not consumer data, the results and success are measured by the authenticity of the final film, and the impact it has had on everyone that has viewed it, and are continuing to view it.

First viewed by thousands on the jumbo screens, who had gathered in Times Square on New Years Eve. Then from January to April, there have been 149,000 views of the film on the Ford.com website.

Primarily for use on Ford.com website, the film is also being aired at various International Motorsport events, including this year's 24 Heures du Mans race in June 2016.

The film has successfully increased awareness of the new Ford GT and has delivered the desired effect of haloing the Ford brand. There is now a real air of excitement and anticipation leading up to the car's appearance at LeMans.
