Description
The biggest challenge for Gabriela was how to warn these children without attracting the attention of their would-be exploiters.
Also, where would Gabriela engage these kids, since in many cases their homes were no longer considered "safe" for them.
On top of this, issues such as child pornography were still considered taboo in a predominantly Catholic country.
Execution
So Gabriela decided to create a children's book, an educational material which would be totally innocuous to pimps and parents.
"There's a Ghost in the Computer" exposes kids to the horrors that lurk within a computer. Fanciful illustrations with tone of gloom accompany a modernised mode of native verse, making it appealing to kids.
The book comes with a page-by-page translation, typical of children's books in the Philippines, given English is their second language.
Outcome
The children's book was only launched this January in select public schools. So far, Gabriela has received positive feedback from the teachers, noting the children's fascination with both its story and illustrations. At the beginning of next school year in June, Gabriela plans to expand distribution of the book in communities and areas where child exploitation is rampant.
