Background

Shizuoka is often referred to as the "Japanese average." It never gets too hot but never too cold. The local dishes taste somewhere in between Eastern and Western Japanese flavours. Shizuoka tends to be labelled as the prefecture without character, and the people of Shizuoka tend to openly admit this fact without hesitation.

This advert is trying to reach out to the people of Shizuoka that instead of giving up, they need to "Surpass Themselves" and make a change.

Execution

This advertisement features a character that many viewers may possibly be able to relate to: an average young girl that tends to give up on what she wants by telling herself excuses. The film depicts the moment she surpasses herself as she breaks through her frustrations and excuses.

The ad received many positive responses via SNS from younger viewers that don't have much interest in TV. The messages from these youths - stating they were "inspired" and "motivated" - is a clear indication that this ad has moved the people of Shizuoka to break through their own comfort zone.
