OVERVIEW

Description

Our idea was to give all dogs a special carry-box that was shaped like a MINI. Our box needed to have dual-functionality, so our design challenges were twofold. Firstly it needed to operate as a carry-box for an animal. Transportability was important, as was safety; so rigorous testing with live animals and the SPCA team needed to be carried out. For example, air vents were created where actual air vents appeared on a full-size MINI. Secondly, we wanted the box to transform into a safe place where puppies could happily spend the first 8 weeks of their lives.

Execution

The design originated as a computer 3D model. MINI plans and elevations were used to map trademark features of the car onto a low-polygon form. Due to cardboard box construction these were simplified into minimal planes and folds. An outer-shell bundled the convertible component, serving as the structural frame for handling and access.

Numerous 1:30-scale prototypes were built before committing to the 1:6 test-production run. After rigorous live animal testing, dielines were modified to perfect fixtures, airholes and angles. Finally, a real MINI was photographed to match planes on the box. A flat-skin was then composited to fit the artwork.

Outcome

The MINI boxes were given away free with every dog adopted at SPCA. Currently there are no boxes left at the SPCA and another print run has been ordered. MINI USA has also requested the artwork to use for local animal shelters they sponsor. We’re thrilled that our MINI carry-boxes will be helping rescue dogs all over the world.
