Description
Skateboarders often put a lot of thought into choosing the right board graphic design. The only problem is that as soon as they skate it, and do their first trick, the typography on the underside wears away, then vanishes.
We wanted to redesign the skateboard, and create a board graphic got better the harder you skated it. Inspiring skaters in New Zealand to keep pushing the limits. A board that gets better as the skater gets better.
Execution
Much research and development lead us to a process whereby the graphic was laser-cut into the base, then filled with a hard resin, and hidden under specifically designed paint, ready to be skated. This mystery encourages you to skate the whole board, performing new tricks to wear down different parts, revealing the design bit by bit. As an added innovation there was also a wax added to the paint, so now skaters don’t have to wax the ledge before they skate it, they can now wax it as they skate it. Meaning they didn’t have to stop.
