Execution
We built a mini research laboratory, with a coin slot in the front. Inside, a scientist sat slumped and motionless. When people made donations he conducted experiments until he felt the money had run out.
The unique visual impact of the structure helped to draw a crowd. The scientist kept them entertained.
By inserting money to keep the scientist working, the spectators had an incentive to donate and achieved an instant sense of satisfaction.
Outcome
The scientist in the booth was always a volunteer so, after production, it was free to operate. People of all ages stopped to pay the scientist to continue working. On average it raised $100 per hour in donations. But the positive exposure generated far outweighed the revenue.
