Description
Our film opens on a very artful hand drawn line moving across a blank canvas. As moves across the canvas, it creates objects and landscapes that take us on an ascending journey up through the mountains of Nepal. As we reach the peak, the line suddenly changes shape mimicking the exact seismograph reading of the 2015 Nepal Earthquake. As the line descends, it recreates scenes of devastation. However we’re given hope as we’re reminded that although Nature has the power to destroy, artists have the power to create and are encouraged to visit an online art auction that will help to raise Nepal through the proceeds.
Execution
We commissioned a Berlin based artist who is renowned for his continuous line drawings to recreate art that was symbolic of a seismographic line. We then animated them using a traditional hand drawn 2D technique in TV Paint. This, along with frame-by-frame rotoscoping, ensured we could achieve the fluidity, organic and natural movement of the line that helped bring the moments to life and may have otherwise felt contrived had we used digital animation. Finally, we assembled the animation in an After FX comp. The line thickness was refined depending on how close or wide the camera was, the line given an ink look and a real paper texture integrated into the background. The final compositing and online was completed in After FX.
