Background
Many Healthcare professionals & laypeople focus only on the dietary aspects of obesity and not on the holistic patient experience and efforts being made throughout a lifetime struggling with weight. This ultimately holds this illness back from being classified as a disease and people taking action.
Execution
The art direction and production design of the film focused on vignettes that visualised the efforts, struggles, and burdens experienced by those living with obesity. The scenography design compartmentalised these varied topics and issues as “islands,” with each acting as a conceptual vessel representing the complex and multi-faceted nature of the disease. Each isolated scene tackles a different aspect of obesity to resonate with a viewers own experiences with weight.
The purposeful “behind-the-scenes” feel of the design supported the brief that personal triumphs and struggles with weight often go unnoticed/are fought alone.
The art direction of islands made of fabric expressing layers of skin, a busy street, a gym, a skipped night out coupled with simple & expressive set-pieces were not just impactful story, but necessary as shooting was done in one day. And most importantly, they communicated a large and complex message in a very personal and emotional way.
