Background
In France the PMU has the monopoly of organizing horse betting: gallop, trots and harnessed. Players can bet on horses whose names are as well known as the jockeys who ride them. During the races, the announcer who comments on the race calls the competitors by the name of their horse and their number.
Execution
This film is a spectacle. There is no other word to describe the power of it. Everything is big and beautiful. The camera is fast and energetic, the light is cinematic and dramatic. We were not looking for any kind of comedic approach. This race had to feel like a proper “Big Hollywood” production. Vast, epic and beautiful. We wanted to feel the real energy of a horse race. To be very close to the riders – almost as if we, the audience, were an extra rider, racing in amongst our heroes. We are not simply passive viewers - we are right there, in the action. The cast of these heroes was a real challenge. And because it involves horse-riding, the director had to direct stunt people.
Being able to showcase all these historical/epic moments of history, without showing too much violence, was also a big job for the director.
