OVERVIEW

Description

This could be a little uncomfortable. Project Bush is a photographic project about vaginas. But more uncomfortable is the fact that 73% of British girls under 16 think a normal vagina is a waxed vagina. That a Brazilian is not just normal, but expected. Our challenge was to disrupt this accepted wisdom.

Project Bush invited women to have their bush anonymously and beautifully photographed to celebrate the wonderful diversity of lady gardens out there. And in so doing, show young women that there is not one kind of bush by many – from Hollywood to Brazilian to full grown, and everything in between.

Project Bush's impact stretched far beyond the immediate coverage it garnered. It sparked a cultural change, swinging the media agenda and pop dialogue back in favour of the Bush.

Execution

Project Bush is a photographic project designed to encourage debate and celebrate the wonderful diversity of lady gardens out there. In late September 2013, we invited women to have their bushes photographed, totally anonymously and very beautifully. The Project Bush release caused quite a stir – not just in London, but all over the world. With over three times our capacity reached after just three days, we had to close bookings. And on Thursday 3rd of October 2013, we opened the Bush Booth to the brave women who'd volunteered. We revealed their bushes in all their glory at projectbush.co.uk, celebrating the project with a Private View. But Project Bush's impact stretched far beyond the immediate coverage it garnered.

Outcome

Project Bush's impact stretched far beyond the immediate coverage it garnered. It sparked a cultural change, swinging the media agenda and pop dialogue back in favour of the Bush. The images captured in Project Bush have also been integrated into a new sex education pilot, designed to make British teenagers more aware of the choices they have. Thanks to those who volunteered, young women now know that there is not one type of bush but many – from Hollywood to Brazilian to full grown, and everything in between. We're not pro bush or anti bush. We're pro choice.
