OVERVIEW

Execution

On April 18, we took over Times Square with an event that showcased over 100 current and former US Olympians. Gold medalist Carl Lewis donated the first stitch and everyone who donated after him on that day saw their name and stitch number in lights in Times Square. Today Show and USAToday covered the event live. That night, the Empire State Building was decked out in red, white and blue.

At the center of the program was a website, where users could view the progress of the flag’s construction, make a donation, claim a stitch and even dedicate it to someone special. While there, visitors could see exactly what their donation was helping to fund, from equipment to food and housing.

Print and Film content showed how different people have supported Olympians along their journey to the London Games - helping to drive people to the site.

Outcome

By the Opening Ceremonies, the campaign garnered 30,000 stitches and over 577 million media impressions.

The donations totaled enough money to fund everything the Team USA would need to come out on top -- from athlete meals, to plane tickets, to boxing rings and starting blocks. Not to mention 46 Gold, 29 silver and 29 bronze medals.

During the program pre-Games time period, USOC saw an increase of over 600,000 Facebook fans, more than 200,000 Twitter followers, and garnered over 100,000 microsite visits – all without any paid media investment. And of course, without any government funding.
