OVERVIEW

Description

The Urban Design Advisory Service (UDAS) commissioned Massive to develop 'The Patternbook', a website and accompanying print publication with the objective of improving the design quality of residential flat developments in New South Wales. The Pattern Book forms one component of New South Wales Government's Design Quality Program. The website raises options and issues for the design of a building, and the relationship of the building's design to its context or setting. It was developed for any person interested in the design of residential flat buildings including planners, architects, developers and councils as a communication and education tool. The website is comprised of 2 parts - 15 case studies of excellent urban design and 3 'building designs'. The Case Studies include text, drawings and photographs explaining how each design responds to its context and satisfies the needs of residents and the community. The 'Building Designs' present designs for three typical building types; urban, garden and coastal. These three designs address site layout, materials, proportions and colours, explain design principles, provide options and demonstrate how to achieve better residential flat development. At the well attended public launch of 'The Pattern Book' th Premier, Bob Carr, declared that urban design is a vital public policy issue and that the Pattern Book is a fantastic resource that will help raise the standard of residential flat design throughout New South Wales... "From today we can go forward and deliver to people what they want."
