Description
The main design challenge was to visualise the hundreds and thousands of connections in a way that did not seem overwhelming, but playful instead.
We had to create a coherent visual design system which allowed us to display content items from multiple sources and user generated content.
The experience was device-agnostic, meaning the design had to scale and be accessible across multiple devices and viewport sizes.
Finally we created a elegant consumer facing admin tool to allow users to create and submit their own content.
Execution
All built in HTML5, the experience was accessible across all devices. We integrated with Google+ pages for Artists, events, and venues. These were visually categorised by date and genre.
Data visualizations then handled using PixiJS with basic physics powered by Box2D: elements are rendered on a HTML5 canvas for improved cross platform compatibility and special care for anti-aliased font and image rendering, as well as a combination of different techniques such as SVG and CSS3 when available to make the most of graphics performance.
Outcome
The campaign has been a huge success, with overwhelmingly positive sentiment from Dance Music fans in the UK. The experience has won several awards for design and technical innovation, and has featured as 'pick of the day' on several advertising and industry blogs.
