Description

After receiving a signal from a probe, a fearless team of space kernels must venture to the edges of the known universe—theatre six—to investigate. In the words of their esteemed leader, Colonel Kernel, the fate of the nation rests on their air-popped shoulders. In this episode, the space kernels accept their mission—a one-way movie ticket—and prepare for boarding. It’s an exciting first episode in a series made to entertain audiences before their movie starts.

Execution

The spot was produced using 3D animation. Character design and modelling were definitely the most challenging aspects. We wanted to stick as closely as possible to what popcorn actually looks like, yet at the same time create a cast of memorable characters, each distinct from each other, who correspond to their individual professions and expertise. Scale was somewhat tricky since we wanted to keep the connection between the tiny characters and their environment. We were also challenged in building and mimicking the dramatic action of a Hollywood blockbuster with plausible concession stand light sources and epic angles in order to make it feel like our space kernels are heading out into the cosmos.
