Midnight Lights - What Stadiums Do When People SleepThe idea of making a stadium come alive with light was hatched during the NFL's extended lockout and we thought this type of visual spectacle could possibly go viral. Applying this effect on a grand scale to CenturyLink field, notoriously known as the 12th man for it's intimidating effect on opponents, was something we just had to do. Besides a raving self-promotion piece it has also become a wildly embraced tribute to the fans of Seattle. The major goal here was to give the stadium a personality, giving it a voice through lights and music. I shot a test animation in my kitchen animating house appliances to a heavily layered electronic house track. Each light was assigned a particular sound or instrument. I realized that with large banks of stadium light it needed something stronger and simpler. That's when I began experimenting with Dubstep sounds. The reverbing electronic wobbles lends itself perfectly to the realistic feeling of electricity surging through it's light banks. There's also the notorious Dubstep "drop," a heavy break from the melody, which perfectly expresses the stunning break from reality when seeing the stadium erupt with life.
