Execution
With the help of augmented reality, anyone can write a message in the heavens in memory of loved ones who have left us.
Sky of Memories extends the well known global positioning system to reach out to the sky.
The application tracks the users position and heading in 6 domains of freedom. This is performed by the device's built in GPS module, magnetometer, accelerometer and if present also the gyroscope.
These sensor information is synthesized by sensor fusion algorithms to the position of the user and the direction in which the user is pointing his device. The application uses the above information (position and heading) to perform ray casting originating from the users place into the sky. Sphere-intersection algorithms return the touched position of an orbit surrounding the earth.
It uses OpenGL shaders to apply video filter effects and extends the cameras video images with virtual objects (crosses) to an augmented reality experience.
Outcome
With over 10.000 downloads and countless messages, “Sky of Memories” has become the world’s largest digital commemorative plaque.
