Background
Director Jimmy Vi was traveling in Japan and first met Producer Kishin Oyama and they hit it off, he asked DP Toshihiko Kizu and approached ZEISS about the project. Thanks in part to ZEISS's immediate acceptance of this production, it could serve as an advertisement to introduce the lens, using only the ZEISS Supreme Prime 15 mm lens. The filming was completed in five days before Jimmy's return to Japan. Created as a jam session, the film embodied the filmmaker's "feel" and successfully expressed the "moment of freedom" of the attractive cast. Filming took place in Tokyo and was shot against the backdrop of "normal everyday life" in Japan, including Shibuya's scramble crossing, a residential area lined with vending machines, and a karaoke bar.
Execution
The DP, Toshihiko Kizu further elaborated on the qualities of the ZEISS Supreme Prime 15 mm lens and why they chose it as their sole lens for the film: “We shot exclusively with this lens in order to explore our characters’ emotional journey in their routine lives. A 15 mm lens on a full- frame camera such as the Venice is actually super wide; such wide lenses usually have strong distortion and lose their sharpness on the edges when shot wide open. However, the Supreme Prime 15 mm magically solves these problems, allowing us to take advantage of the pure quality of a wide lens without any distortion. This wouldn’t have been possible with any other wide lens.”
