Background

46% of the people affected by a critical illness did not disclose their condition at work. They are afraid of the impact this will have on how they are perceived and treated. They fear it might affect their work life and treatment by colleagues, that might see them as fragile, unfit to work, or even responsible for their condition. And there are concerns about career impact and the added stress of secrecy during a difficult time.

Coming forward is not easy and nobody should have to shoulder this burden alone. Beiersdorf is committed to support their employers in these difficult times and help break the stigma around critical illness. The film raises the awareness of the emotional struggle of people affected, as well as introducing Beiersdorf’s new policy that will guarantee financial stability, job protection, and paid leave for caregivers. Because they believe the power of care can change everything.

Execution

The film is based on an actual letter written by an employee affected by cancer, that he had never the courage to share. The director wanted to contrast office life's positivity with the protagonist's silent emotional turmoil, conveyed subtly without exposition, with a feature film-quality execution for a concise yet powerful message. The narrative unfolds quietly for emotional audience connection, and the performance of the actor reflects a modern independent film style.

The cinematography features natural, atmospheric lighting and precise, unobtrusive movements to intensify character focus, using stable camera techniques like dolly or steadicam shots. Specific shots, like panning from the protagonist to zooming in on his face, draw viewers into his inner world. Sound design transitions from external to internal perspectives, using muffled and intermittent sounds to mirror the protagonist's emotional state and medical journey, to allow the audience intimately experiences the protagonist's struggle within his seemingly normal workday.

Outcome

Launched at the Beiersdorf internal global summit, an email titled 'Hi, I hope this email finds you well' was sent to over 22,000 employees in more than 100 countries, spanning offices and factory floors. The email introduced the film and announced the new global policy and support initiatives.

The film has sparked conversations among employees about critical illnesses. Just right after its launch some employees shared letters with their colleagues detailing their personal experiences and offering words of encouragement to those currently facing critical illnesses.

The goal is to raise awareness of the topic, foster understanding, initiate discussions, and most importantly, to encourage even those who are most hesitant to share their diagnosis at work to feel comfortable coming forward and seeking the support they need.
