OVERVIEW

Background

UN Women is a global charity dedicated to gender equality and the empowerment of women and girls. A key part of their work is making sure every woman and girl feels safe. In the UK, 71% of women have experienced sexual harassment in public spaces. We created an opportunity to transform the conversation about safety with an impactful OOH activation, targeted at politicians, journalists and wider influencers. We dominated an immersive public space known as the 'Whitehall Corridor' in proximity to the Houses of Parliament and brought to life what women experience when they feel unsafe in a public space.

Our objective was to create an immersive experience of walking through the long, exposed Whitehall corridor, taking our audiences a journey to appreciate the reality of being a woman on the streets of the UK and providing the clear actions we can all take to make a positive change.

Outcome

The main reason people don’t intervene to help is that they aren’t sure how to do so safely and effectively. Education is key. We commissioned two brilliant Illustrators to dramatize a woman’s experience. The graphics at the start of her journey are darker showing progress down the 'street', with shadows/men following behind her. After a safe intervention from a member of the public, the journey becomes light and the shadows have turned into people who keep their distance. The final space is quotes from women describing what they want their streets to be like vs their lived experience. Finally, the call to action is for Parliament to pledge to create cities which are ‘Safe Spaces Now. The Illustration had an incredible impact on the thousands who stopped to talk and engage with the artwork, stimulating messages of support both during and after the campaign across social media
