Background

Every day the amazon loses millions of trees for different reasons: Illegal minery, Livestock, Wood industry, etc… but there is one that has gone unnoticed. One that is causing a bigger impact every year: The aguaje harvest. A Little fruit that grows in the jungle of Peru.

This is because of the 35 meters (115 foot) that separate the fruit from the ground makes cutting down the palm tree, where it grows, the quickest solution to get it.

The growing demand for aguaje lead to the deforestation of over one million hectares, that’s the size of 800 thousand professional soccer fields.

That’s why we took out the chainsaws engines and turned them into something more constructive.

Idea

We took the engine of the chainsaws to create a tool that can climb the palm tree of aguaje without harming it… turning the weapon into the solution. This tool can help many native communities not only stop the deforestation of the aguaje forests, but also triple their economic productivity.

Strategy

We are targeting the people of the Amazon of Peru, people who know the importance of the Honda brand for their economy.

We decided not only to create a new business category, but to demonstrate to the Amazon population that Honda is a brand committed their community and that it is a partner in the development of their economy.

That is why we created «The Vertical Bike», a tool that not only helped them to increase their income by making it easier for them to collect aguaje, but also to avoid the deforestation of their jungle.

Execution

The vertical was born as an idea in 2019, before the pandemic. Putting it to the test was a challenge due to how unpredictable it is to work inside the Amazon rainforest. The climate and the limitations that we had when entering the jungle were many, however, the help of the community greatly influenced the correct development of this project.

We implemented Vertical Bikes all over the jungle in partnership with the association of aguaje workers from Parinaris.

Each of them can save up to 6 trees per day and triples the collection of a single worker.

Outcome

The creation of Vertical Bikes not only seeks to care for the environment, but also to generate opportunities for multiples families who were engaged in the business of agriculture and harvesting throughout the Peruvian Amazon.

Through Vertical Bikes, hundreds of family businesses in the Amazon have been benefited since our innovation triples the daily production of aguaje.

In this way, our Vertical Bikes has already generated close to 10 million impressions and more than 500k dollars of earned media, which is increasing the interest from various family businesses in the Peruvian jungle for having access to Vertical Bike.
