Execution

To approximate what people find most important right now, the website builds on the real-time power of the social media platform Twitter.

In the background, Twitter is continuously scraped for tweets that mention one of the featured topics. Various keywords are checked per topic to be as comprehensive as possible ([game of thrones], [#gameofthrones], [#got], etc.).

The backend of the site is built on Symfony2 — a framework on which many of the most advanced applications of PHP are built. This is one of the reasons for why the site is swift and can compute data-visualization requests almost instantly.

The site’s tablet-friendly frontend is completely achieved in HTML5 and CSS. Leveraging the full power of HTML5’s canvas element, all of the data visualizations are rendered and animated live.

Outcome

Users can choose two from several permanently updated curated topics. A specifically designed

algorithm then grabs live-data of social shares in the last 48 hours based on those topics and instantly

creates one of several graphics or animations based on the results. So when the numbers change -

so do the visualizations.
