Description
When Yamaha asked us to build their new bike configurator, we translated custom bike builder’s insights into one simple rule: Nothing comes between a rider and their bike. We created a customization app with a stripped back interface by eliminating cluttered menus. Everything that you see, touch, and feel is rendered in realtime 3D giving you direct influence over every bike - allowing the rider to customize a bike with their bare hands, like they would in real life.
Execution
The My Garage bike configurators were built for riders across Europe via iOS and Android mobile apps, available for both phones and tablet - with plans to launch them on large in-store touch screens to the major retailers in the region.
Configurators of Yamaha’s three main bike ranges were individually built with custom UI designs and tone of voice to fit the specific category’s branding. 3 unique environments with more than 30 bikes, 80 variations, and over 700 accessories were custom modeled, lit, and textured for the real-time 3D apps.
Through the research and inspiration phase we discovered that using real-time 3d was the best option as most online configurators lacked freedom and were restricted to cluttered menus and limited visual options. Teams were created to tackle the design, interactive, 3D, and development workflows. Among these processes include custom 3d shader creation, real-time testing, analytics, rollout, on-site big event launch, and a planned future for other bike categories coming soon. The overall timeline from early concept ran 6 months for the initial version launch with every 3-4 months updated versions thereafter.
