Others know Singapore as very clean, safe, green, a model of efficiency and extraordinary economic accomplishments. But we think the real Singapore lies in the little everyday things and norms, our funny quirks, our warts and all. And it is these that readers get to discover in ZINEGAPORE, a spoof of a travel guide.

Execution

Steering away from the straight and conventional, we took a wacky, cheeky approach. To bring up the ‘human’ aspect of Singapore, we chose to use hand-drawn illustrations for a more personal and charming effect. These were complemented with bold typography for an eye-catching juxtaposition.

Outcome

As an interactive installation in the “Singapore: Inside Out” exhibition, ZINEGAPORE was well received by the many visitors who appreciated its humorous take on Singapore. Later on when it was released as an app, ZINEGAPORE proved to be popular too. As 2015 was the year of Singapore’s 50th Jubilee, we timed the launch of the app to coincide with Singapore’s National Day, 9th August. Within the first week, the app garnered a sizeable number of downloads. ZINEGAPORE was also picked up by news and media, and featured on various design blogs both local and international.
