OVERVIEW

Why is this work relevant for Outdoor?

By displaying the "Penguin Relationship Chart," created from love and detailed observation by the breeding staff, alongside the actual penguins, it has made it easy and direct for visitors to discover the individuality and social dynamics of each penguin.

Please provide any cultural context that would help the Jury understand any cultural, national or regional nuances applicable to this work.

Since the era of classical literature, Japanese people have been enjoying and visualizing complex human relationships through relationship charts. In order to help visitors discover the individuality and sociality similar to those of humans in each penguin, we believed that adopting the familiar format of a "relationship chart" would be best suited to provide the pleasure of deep and complex interpretation.

Background:

There are about 130 aquariums in Japan, and penguins can be seen in many of them. The fact that penguins are present in all aquariums has led people to pay less attention to individual penguins; however, we wanted to share the discovery that these penguins actually have individual personalities and social interactions similar to those of human beings. Using the breeding records kept by the staff over many years as a starting point, we set out to create a relationship chart (Penguin Soap Opera) that included all the penguins as well as the staff. The goal was not only to give people the opportunity to become fond of each penguin but also to intuitively understand how Sumida and Kyoto Aquariums deal with living creatures.

Describe the Impact:

We updated the chart every year for six years, and each update became a major story, especially on social media. Moreover:

- It was adapted into an anime as a special program on public broadcasting.

- It was also made into a comic book and published.

- Aquariums across Japan followed suit.

- Social media posts from international visitors led to coverage in English and Chinese news.

- The impressions on social media reached around 18.4 million.

The Penguin Soap Opera not only achieved recognition for Sumida Aquarium and Kyoto Aquarium but also brought innovation to the industry, changing the way we see penguins as living creatures.

Please comment on how the brand resonated with a specific target audience in a single locality or market.

It quickly became a topic among Japanese people who like to make relationship charts, and each update was followed by a voice saying, "it came out again this year." In addition, the phrase "made a relationship chart like Penguin Soap Opera," led to the creation of charts of various relationships by the general public.
